"Semua Orang Sudah Sampai?" George Town Festival 2024 Kicks Off with the Theme "Here & Now" Today!

Published on 20/07/2024

George Town Festival started today with vibrant energy! In the “Preserving Memories” installation, Japanese artist Kaito Sakuma created an acoustic experience by vibrating a liquid mirror, blending seamlessly with the wind breezes of Penang Quay. With the solid support of Penang’s earth, Australian artist led "Shadow Sculptures," a participatory art activity that used nature as both material and canvas.

The entire festival was further enlivened by the Opening Boria Performance, featuring quirky and humorous narration. The festival's opening truly set the tone, filling the air with excitement and bringing smiles and joy to everyone present.

Powered by the theme “Here & Now” and running from 19th to 28th July, the 10-day festival boasts a stacked lineup of over 80 programmes featuring local and international artists. In addition to acts from Penang and wider Malaysia, GTF 2024 welcomes artists from Indonesia, Thailand, Italy, Taiwan, Spain, Australia, Japan, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Colombia, Singapore, the United States, Vietnam, China, and India.

The opening ceremony was officiated by the Chief Minister of Penang, YAB Chow Kon Yeow, and Penang State EXCO for Tourism and the Creative Economy (PETACE) YB Wong Hon Wai, alongside some of the festival’s international partners and artists.

"Semua Orang Sudah Sampai ke?" ("Has everyone arrived yet?"), a witty shout-out from Omara Boria, called for a reunion of the arts industry. Nothing fit more than the theme "Here & Now" this morning. The hard work of GTF's core team, combined with the vibrancy of the event, has energised everyone to kickstart the festival. Perhaps it’s the festival and us who are truly blessed to have such a dedicated new team.
