Portraying mental health on stage or screen is challenging enough. Now, imagine tackling something as deeply personal and complex as bipolar disorder — and doing so in a musical.
That’s precisely what Next to Normal set out to achieve when American playwright and lyricist Brian Yorkey penned the rock musical in 2008.
After a series of workshops, it eventually made its way to Broadway, where it won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama — only the eighth musical ever to receive the honour, out of just 10 in total.
On 8 November, Monday Show Entertainment will bring a raw, unfiltered Malaysian rendition of this story to life, diving into a family’s struggle with mental illness.
Through electrifying rock music and a gripping storyline, Next to Normal explores the ripple effects of bipolar disorder, showing how it impacts not just those diagnosed but everyone close to them.
A Musical That Aims To Be Respectful And Accurate In Its Portrayal Of Mental Illness
For director Dominic Lucien Luk, known for his acclaimed productions of Once On This Island (2023), Avenue Q (2017), Little Shop of Horrors (2014) and more, taking on Next to Normal is about much more than just putting on a show.
“One of the main challenges is doing justice to the sensitive subject matter,” Dominic shares. “Balancing the emotional intensity with the musical’s lighter moments, while ensuring the portrayal of mental illness is respectful and accurate, is a delicate task.”
With 56,098 people across all demographic groups in Malaysia registered as having mental disabilities according to the Department of Social Welfare (JKM), Dominic brought seasoned clinical psychiatrist, Dr Joel Low, as a consultant and an invaluable member of the production.
“We’ve consulted resources on mental health and held open discussions about the themes,” Dominic revealed. “The goal is to depict these issues with care, avoiding stereotypes or over-sensationalisation.”

Unlike typical mood changes, these shifts can be severe and disruptive, affecting a person’s daily life, work, and relationships.
