About
Early music and historically informed performances, especially those that involve period instruments are still a rarity in Malaysia. The final installment of VerSeS’s Renaissance & Baroque Gems series for 2022 will focus on the works of J.S. Bach & M.A. Charpentier. Both composers are from the Baroque period, though their styles vary greatly and thus provides a wide perspective to the music of the Baroque period. In addition, the set up of a small instrumental ensemble comprising two baroque recorders, a viola da gamba, a cello and a digital continuo organ aims to recreate, as close as possible, the sounds of the era. Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden (BWV 230) is one of only six motets by J.S. Bach. The virtuosic and energetic music is sure to captivate both novice and connoisseurs alike. Actus Tragicus (BWV 106) is one of Bach’s earliest cantatas, composed at the age of 22. Despite the young age, his ingenuity and detailed musical writing shines bright, in addition to his effective and economic use of musicians (a small vocal ensemble supported by a modest instrumental ensemble). The aria “Schafe können sicher weiden” from his Hunting Cantata BWV 208, has been an evergreen crowd favorite for its pleasing tune. M.A. Charpentier’s Messe de minuit pour Noël (H. 9), provides great contrast to J.S. Bach’s music. Selections from this work include lively movements that have incorporated traditional folk tunes (Noëls).
