MIA is a community of lively young artists in the&nbsp;

Malaysia Institute of Art (MIA) City Campus, Dang Wangi

Sharlene holds an ATCL Diploma in Singing Performance. She is classically trained as a soprano under the tutelage of renowned pedagogue, Baritone Cha Seng Tiang. She enjoys singing different music genres with friends and is a member of VerSeS Music Ensembles, appearing frequently as soloists in the Singing Balcony initiatives and other lecture recitals. Her passion for learning new languages made her a finalist in the  National Classical Singing Competition in 2018. She works as a student advisor in the aviation industry, however, her true passion lies in singing.

Sharlene Rani

Born in Penang Malaysia soprano Chew Shi Yun currently serves as the Director of Yin Qi Children’s Choir and Subang City Discipleship Presbyterian Chinese Church Choir.  Over the years, Shi Yun has appeared as an active concert soloist and chorister in collaboration with conductors Elaine Pao (Yin Qi Choir), Caeleb Tee (Yin Qi Choir) and Dr. David Chin (Bachfest Malaysia). Her recent highlights including performance of “Out of the Depths-Bach’s cantata Lecture Concert Tour” and Bach’s St. Matthew Passion with Bachfest Malaysia; and she was the soloist in John Rutter’s Requiem and Dubois’ The Seven Last Words with Yin Qi Choir. Shi Yun joined Verses-The KL Madrigal Singers in 2021, with director Scott Woo she has performed “The Schert Session” a Schubert’s Lieder lecture recital and has often performed in their “Renaissance and Baroque Gems” Lecture Concert series both publicly and music faculties of local varsities.

Hailing from Sarawak, Scott has been an avid choral singer since young. He has taken on a variety of roles in the classical music landscape, including lay clerk, choirmaster, musical director, talent agent, tenor soloist and concert producer, both locally and abroad. Upon returning from Germany in 2017, Scott strives to promote different portfolios of classical vocal and choral repertoire to the Malaysian audiences, such as “The Singing Balcony” initiative. He also directs several long running lecture recitals consisting of 4 key programs to-date, namely “Renaissance & Baroque Gems”, “Art Song Artistry”, “Opera Galore” and “Sounds of Iberia & Latin America”;  delivered primarily via VerSeS Music Ensembles with the collaboration of local tertiary institutions, art galleries and music schools. Scott enjoys sharing music in no-frills settings and hopes to see music making and music appreciation become a part of everyday life. He is the director and vocal coach of VerSeS - the KL Madrigal Singers.

Darrel is passionate about teaching and focuses on engaging the students’ minds and encourages them to solve problems by themselves using a combination of music theory, aural, and harmony skills. This cultivates a self-disciplined and self-motivated musician.

Apart from being a countertenor soloist, Darrel is an active choral conductor and active collaborative pianist, working with singers and instrumentalists in Malaysia and Birmingham. Currently Darrel conducts VerSeS, sings with the KL Madrigal Singers and teaches music around the Klang Valley.

Darrel Chan

YS Tang, a distinguished figure in Malaysia’s classical music landscape. A graduate of Texas Tech University School of Music with a Master’s degree in Music Performance, the artist has continuously expanded the reach of classical music through concerts, public seminars, and youth outreach initiatives. Tang is also a dedicated collaborator, performing with chamber ensembles and focusing on early music, and a vast repertoire that spans from Bach to Barrios. His contributions to both performance and pedagogy make him a leading voice for the classical guitar.

YS Tang 是 马来西亚古典吉他演奏家。他毕业于美国德州，Texas Tech University School of Music, 获得音乐演奏系硕士学位。除了个人演奏以外，他还积极参与室内乐团的合作演出，专注于早期音乐，曲目涵盖从早期音乐到南美音乐的广泛作品。邓老师通过音乐会、公开讲座推广古典音乐活动，默默为古典吉他文学的传播贡献。

YS Tang

Iau Jo Yee was awarded Bachelor of Music with First Class Honours from Birmingham
Conservatoire in 2016. During her 3-year course in Birmingham Conservatoire, Jo Yee
studied with Jan Loeffler and Philip Martin. She was active as an accompanist for both
instrumentalists and vocalists, and has participated in various piano competitions and
music festivals aside from her annual recitals. During her senior year, she had the
opportunity to perform with the City of Birmingham Youth Symphony Orchestra, and
has also won the Marjorie Hazlehurst Piano Award for her recording a full-length CD
featuring works by Tatum, Schulhoff, Gershwin and Antheil.

Jo Yee is now teaching piano in MIA, ASWARA and Yamaha Sonata Music and Art.
She is also frequently sought after as an accompanist for exams, recitals, competitions,
gigs. She recently performed as a guest pianist in Heart 2 Heart Charity Gala Night
organized by Malaysian celebrity Lee Sinje. Apart from performing, Jo Yee is also
interested in music scoring and arrangement. She was one of the programme arrangers
of Young Malaysians Go Classics II (2017), and the programme leader and one of the
key performers of Yamaha Sonata Music and Artâ's first major public performance:
Dear Parents Concert 2018. She was also one of the recipients of the Young Song
Weavers Scholarship Program and performed in the Rossini's Heart and Soul (2018) as
an accompanist and soloist. In March 2019, Jo Yee was invited to perform with bass
trombone principal of SÃo Paulo State Symphony Orchestra (Brazil), Darrin Milling at
the 'First Brass Weekend with Darrin Milling', hosted by The British International
School in Kuala Lumpur.
