About
A Tale That Must Be Told: Macbeth – An Unforgettable Shakespeare Experience
Since its premiere at the Kuala Lumpur International Arts Festival in 2017, A Tale That Must Be Told: Macbeth has become one of KLSP’s longest-running and most celebrated productions. Over the years, it has captivated audiences across Malaysia—from theatre venues to schools—and even brought its bold storytelling to Jakarta, Manila, and Seoul.
Designed for audiences of all ages, from children as young as five to seasoned Shakespeare enthusiasts, this production offers a dynamic, multi-layered experience. Whether new to Shakespeare or well-versed in his works, every audience member will find something to engage with, making it both educational and entertaining.
Performed in contemporary English with key phrases from Shakespeare’s original text, the play’s true magic lies in its highly interactive nature. Audiences don’t just watch—they become part of the story. Whether joining a dramatic battle, a royal banquet, the witches’ eerie seduction, or a lively dance, spectators are fully immersed in the world of Macbeth like never before.
As Gregory Doran, Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, once said:
"You have to let the bug bite before kids get cynical. Letting them get involved when they are 13 is much harder than getting to kids earlier, without all the prejudices and stresses and strains of the idea that Shakespeare is somehow difficult or boring or academic."
This philosophy is at the heart of A Tale That Must Be Told: Macbeth, proving that Shakespeare is not just accessible but thrilling, engaging, and deeply relevant to today’s audiences.
Synopsis
Macbeth, a valiant and honourable Scottish general, receives a prophecy from three “weird sisters” that he will be the next King of Scotland. Apprehensive at first, he eventually succumbs to his wife’s persuasion as well as his own ambition, and becomes king. Holding on tightly to the crown, he destroys his kingdom.
