About

ABOUT THE PLAY

“Egotesticle” or its alternate title, “Memoirs of Masochists” is a semi-devised piece by Asyraf Syahir; featuring a diverse cast of 6: Perassath, Piravina Ragunathan, Maryam Rashika, Beams, Ryan Yap, and Hanna Lee. The play revolves around the story of 6 adults with sadomasochistic sexual tendencies, who met each other through a group sexual encounter; and decided to further connect with one another through texting and the internet afterwards. Through their online conversations, the six characters start to open up about their "non-normative” sexual kinks – which unexpectedly (and reluctantly) lead towards a long overdue critical introspection of how their current psyche, and past social experiences are intricately linked with their sexual fetishes. While the main theme of the play will revolve around sex, the play will extensively explore the topic beyond the dimension of sex and into the dimensions of psychology, social identities and relations (focusing on race, religion, and sexual identities), and the yearn for self understanding, through visual metaphors and symbolism. Overall, the play can be described as an explorative performance that visually experiments and textually examines the collective thoughts, memories, and experiences of what society would normally define as a “masochist” - be it literally or metaphorically.

TO date, EJKLS Seni has produced multiple events, ranging from theatre productions (i.e., “Garam”, “Dara, Darah, & Amarah”, & “Why Do We Dream What We Dream When We Dream What We Dream”), multidisciplinary arts events (i.e., Breaking Borders), poetry events (i.e., “Senggama Kata” & “Pabila Aksara Berasmara”), and music events (i.e., Kampong Session).

EJKLS Seni strongly advocates for accessibility towards arts and arts education. Over the years, we have started multiple education-based initiatives – among them are The Young Blood Experiment (TYBE), Arts Accessibility Programme (AAP), Creators’ Lab, and the Actors’ Safe Stage Initiative.
