The performance deploys contemporary dance movement, gestures and original sound design to deliver this storytelling on the contemporary dance stage, drawn from Jing&rsquo;s original short story written as part of the production, Once Upon A Nian年.

NIAN GAO年糕: A Retelling

Jessie Jing is a Malaysian contemporary dance artist, choreographer and writer based in London, Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), and Hong Kong. Much of Jing’s endeavours surround contemporary dance theatre and storytelling, anchored at the thresholds of immersive and site specific theatre and performances, including gallery installations and live art performances. Her performance and choreographic work also extends into commercial and corporate platforms and live events involving brand activations campaigns, music videos and experiential events.

As of 2022, Jing was a solo presenting dance artist for Stateless Minds: Bodies of Knowledge, part of a satellite event, Pera+Flora+Fauna for the 59th La Biennale di Venezia, debuting her piece, Body Clippings. She also debuted her dance theatre piece, Nian Gao年糕 during the Lunar New Year Festival produced by Have you eaten yet? Collective which Jessie is a part of as founding artist, going on to receive the Malaysian BOH Cameronian x Kakiseni Grant for New Productions 2022 to further develop Nian Gao年糕 into a full-length act, NIAN GAO年糕: A Retelling set for March 2023. 

Jing has also directed, produced and performed performance-installation works in London such as, This Is The Way It Is (2019) and Letters to Ma (2021), surrounding the social themes of female and cultural identity within society, and the personal narratives of the East and South-East Asian matriarchs within diasporic communities. Her dance theatre piece, The dog who ran down the road, was held as part of the Trinity Laban Graduate Showcase 2021, performed in Laban Theatre, which transformed the traditional theatre space into an installative, site-specific experience and was an reimagination of her grandmother’s story of a dog drawn from World War II.

Lim Jie Shern (Jason) is a sound engineer from Malaysia with a diverse background in audio production. He recently completed his Bachelor of Audio Production at SAE Institute London and holds a Diploma in Sound Production from the International College of Music (ICOM) in Malaysia, which he earned in 2020.

Jason's career in the music industry began in 2010 when he joined Lee Rubber Chinese Orchestra (LRCO). Since then, he has developed a passion for sound engineering and has gained valuable experience as a freelance live sound engineer for various events. In addition, he has worked as a recording and mixing engineer under the mentorship of Mr. Ong Yuan Shun, where he honed his skills in orchestral production.

Jason has a particular interest in audio post-production and has accumulated extensive experience in sound design for films, animations, and games. He is dedicated to his craft and constantly seeks new opportunities to improve his skills and expand his knowledge.
