About
LaguKu 3.0 - How did the project start?
At the end of 2022, the two founders of Orang Orang Drum Theatre (OODT) invited the younger generation to try to create their music. It was right after OODT's last production “The Hidden Tune 掘失” where the lingering sparks of inspiration during the working process with three jazz musicians, waiting to be harvested. Hence, this invitation transformed into a creation where the members got to “jazz” together, creating “24 Jazz Drums” instead of 24 Festive Drums, the traditional art form. They invited the members to use the “Lion Dance Drum” as the main creative element to develop their preferred music style and form of performance.
Of course, we are clueless about jazz so it was just an initial point to observe how the free improvisation spirit in jazz music can grow into their own “songs”.
As someone 25 to 35 years of age, what is in their mind? What do they like?
What does the “creation process” mean to them? Is it a mirror as we expect it to be?
A mirror that reflects them thoroughly, plays the beat out, sings out and dances out the LaguKu (my song) that belongs to them.

About Orang Orang Drum Theatre
Since its establishment in 2013, Orang Orang Drum Theatre’s core members Boyz Chew, Zyee Leow, and Damien Leow have been dancing between music, dance, and theatre, looking for a platform of expression for drum theatre. Bringing a team with them, they participated in the international music festivals such as Rainforest World Music Festival 2023, Sziget Festival 2019, WOMADELAIDE 2020, Venice Theatre Arts Festival, Venice Open Stage, Belgium and Germany Dance Festival Danse en Ville. In recent years, they have brought their troupe to tour at many cultural and dance arts festivals in Europe, such as in France, Hungary and Serbia. Through interactions with traditional cultures, they play between tradition and contemporary.
All of OODT’s members have had training from the 24 Festive Drums (Malaysia’s cultural heritage), how then can the basic training from this folk performance connect to the creative work in contemporary performing arts? Malaysia is the convergence point of a multicultural society, how do the traditional cultural performances of the different ethnic groups stimulate the imagination of the members in terms of music and theatre?
