About
Laguku 3.0
Transform. Seven Forms.
Pelapis waris drumming out of the norm.
Growing up with the sound of drums, pelapis waris resemble a group of young leopards for whom drumming is almost instinctual akin to hunting. After years of skill honing, they finally radiate with the dazzling transformation of a leopard. With new claws and spots, firmly armed with their drumsticks, they are introducing seven forms of works ready to pounce upon the world.
“Laguku 3.0” is the latest edition of the signature performance series by Orang Orang Drum Theatre with the two previous editions presented in 2015 and 2019. Centered on percussion blended with theatre, dance, lighting and other performance elements, it presents the bizarre, unorthodox yet diverse lives of modern urbanities through a multi-layered audiovisual experience.
Out of their norm, “Laguku 3.0” no longer chronicles the story of urban experiences, but instead reflects on the bond between the self and the shigu (lion dance drum).
This time, Orang Orang Drum Theatre hands over the creative baton to seven groups of emerging members, the pelapis waris. Under the guidance of senior members and mentors from different disciplines, they have spent two years in the creative process. Armed with solid drumming skills and diverse expression approaches, they explore the inner journey of their drumming experience all these years.
“Laguku 3.0” comprises seven pieces, each drawn from personal experiences with elements selected to match their own personalities such as street hip-hop, whimsical literature, vocal ensembles and folk rituals incorporating the lion drum and a plethora of musical instruments such as gamelan, African drum, xylophone and others. Each of the seven pieces is presented in seven distinct styles, narrating their entanglements and enlightenment with the shigu.
We invite you to witness these leopard-like transformations in seven forms, pelapis waris drumming out of the norm.

About Orang Orang Drum Theatre
Since its establishment in 2013, Orang Orang Drum Theatre’s core members Boyz Chew, Zyee Leow, and Damien Leow have been dancing between music, dance, and theatre, looking for a platform of expression for drum theatre. Bringing a team with them, they participated in the international music festivals such as Rainforest World Music Festival 2023, Sziget Festival 2019, WOMADELAIDE 2020, Venice Theatre Arts Festival, Venice Open Stage, Belgium and Germany Dance Festival Danse en Ville. In recent years, they have brought their troupe to tour at many cultural and dance arts festivals in Europe, such as in France, Hungary and Serbia. Through interactions with traditional cultures, they play between tradition and contemporary.
All of OODT’s members have had training from the 24 Festive Drums (Malaysia’s cultural heritage), how then can the basic training from this folk performance connect to the creative work in contemporary performing arts? Malaysia is the convergence point of a multicultural society, how do the traditional cultural performances of the different ethnic groups stimulate the imagination of the members in terms of music and theatre?
