In celebrating Johann Sebastian Bach&rsquo;s 338th birthday anniversary, Malaysia renowned artists soprano Ang Mei Foong and pianist Ng Chong Lim will join the Malaysia Bach Festival Orchestra led by international conductor David Chin in this concert, performing two solo cantatas and keyboard concertos. <br />

All Things New: Bach Birthday Anniversary Celebration Concert

David Chin is the founder and Artistic Director of Bachfest Malaysia, and the conductor of the award-winning Malaysia Bach Festival Singers and Orchestra. He has conducted all the major works and motets by J.S. Bach, and more than three dozen Bach cantatas. In addition, he has led choirs and orchestras around the world in numerous major works by composers ranging from the Renaissance era to the 21st century, and in world-premieres, a capella to choral-orchestral works, and standard repertoire to vocal jazz and Broadway musicals. He has performed and taught throughout the United States and Malaysia, as well as in Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Canada, Germany, and Italy. 

Besides maintaining a vibrant performing career, David is equally active in the fields of education and musicology. He is currently a long-term Visiting Professor of Music at Augustana University in the United States, where he directs inaugural Augustana Bach Collegium and the Bach Cantata Series, as well as conducts various ensembles, and teaches conducting and music history. He was named as a Senior Fellow of Bach-Archiv Leipzig in 2022, and became the fourth person to receive this honorary title since the founding of the institution in 1950. David translated renowned Bach scholar Michael Maul’s Bach: A Pictorial Biography from German into Chinese. In 2020, David produced Encountering Bach, a documentary film on the life and music of J.S. Bach, which was filmed exclusively in Germany. It is available in both English and Mandarin versions, and has drawn a large viewership from across the globe. He has served as Director of Choral Activities and Music Professor at multiple universities in the United States, and his conducting students have been admitted to graduate programs at prominent institutions.

David studied conducting with renowned conductor and pedagogue William Weinert, who has been his mentor since 2010. He holds both Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees from the Eastman School of Music, where he was the recipient of the Charles W. Kennett Scholarship and the Herman Genhart Choral Conducting Scholar Award, in addition to full scholarship to pursue both degrees. His motto is Philippians 4:13.

David Chin

Multiple award-winning soprano Ang Mei Foong was awarded the "Silver Medal Winner Award-Outstanding Achievement" in the Global Music Award; the Golden Medal Award (Voice Category) from the Berliner International Music Competition. In 2018, she was bestowed with the title “Cavaliere” (a Knight of The Order of Star of Italy), a prestigious recognition by the Italian government of her outstanding achievements in vocal art; followed by the Best Solo Performance (Vocal) award in the 16th Boh Cameronian Arts Awards 2019; and the National Academics Awards (the category of Performing Arts) by Ministry of Education Malaysia in which the award was presented by Tun Dr. Mahathir in 2019. As an active recitalist, Mei Foong has given several well-received solo recitals in Kuala Lumpur, Taiwan, Macau, Rome, and Melbourne. Her opera performances had also been warmly received, she has performed title roles in Bizet’s Carmen, Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors, Puccini’s La bohème, Mozart's Die Zauberflöte and Le Nozze di Figaro, and Verdi’s La Traviata. She now serves as Head of Music Department at Universiti Putra Malaysia. 

女高音洪美楓是現代馬來西亞最受矚目的女高音之一，常受邀擔任各大型音樂會獨唱領唱者和各大型歌劇女主角，也常受邀到各地大師班當指導。她活躍的音樂工作者，所演唱的曲目廣泛，室內樂作品則包括舒曼的《女人的愛情與生活》丶佛瑞的《美好之歌》丶理查·史特勞斯的《最後四首歌》、貝爾格的《最初的七首歌曲》等；她也曾擔任韓德爾的《聖塞西莉亞節頌歌》以及《彌賽亞》的女高音獨唱。除此之外，她也愛好演唱當代作曲家之作品，也曾受邀參與多場馬來西亞當代聲樂作品之世界首演音樂會。美楓曾多次與吉隆坡城市歌劇公司合作，曾參與歌劇《卡門》、《阿瑪爾與夜訪者》、《波西米亞人》、《費加洛的婚禮》、《茶花女》皆擔任女主角一角；美楓也多次參與馬來西亞愛樂交響樂團的歌劇與音樂會獨唱女高音的邀演。現擔任馬來西亞博特拉大學音樂系主任。

Pianist and Composer Ng Chong Lim has performed both as a soloist and chamber musician in many international festivals including The 3rd Asian Grand Piano Concert in Seoul, “Evmelia” International Music Festival in Greece, 2014 “21st New Music Festival” in Almaty, Kazakhstan, 2018 International Taipei Piano Maestro Festival, 2019 Perugia Music Festival in Italy, and 2022 concerto performance with Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. He has served as juror of international competitions, such as The 5th 6th and 7th ASEAN International Chopin Piano Competition in Malaysia, The Jakarta International Piano Competition, and 2019 & 2020 Singapore International Piano Competition. He holds degrees from the Royal College of Music (RCM), London and the Universitat fur Musik und darstellende Kunst Graz, Austria.

鋼琴家與作曲家黃仲林以獨奏者及重奏身份活躍予各個國際音樂活動，其中包括在首爾舉辦的第三屆亞洲鋼琴音樂節，希臘的”Evmelia”國際音樂節，在哈薩克斯坦·阿拉木圖舉辦的第21屆新音樂節，台北國際大師鋼琴藝術節，以及義大利佩魯賈音樂節。他於 2022年與馬來西亞愛樂樂團合作演出。仲林也曾擔任許多國際鋼琴比賽評委，如於馬來西亞舉辦的第五，六及第七屆蕭邦國際鋼琴比賽，印尼雅加達舉辦的國際鋼琴比賽以及2019年與2020年在新加坡舉辦的國際鋼琴大賽。他於2011年受馬來西亞森美蘭州最高統治者嚴端封為STM（Setiawan Tuanku Muhriz 獎章-Associate-Order of Loyalty to Tuanku Muhriz) ，以表揚他在馬來西亞音樂界所作出許多貢獻。他的母校包括英國皇家音樂學院(RCM)以及奧地利的格拉茨音樂與表演藝術大學。

Bachfest Malaysia was founded by Artistic Director David Chin in 2015. Its inaugural performance was the Malaysian premiere of St. John Passion by the Malaysia Bach Festival Singers and Orchestra. Since then, they have performed Mass in B minor, St. Matthew Passion, numerous cantatas, motets, and instrumental works by Johann Sebastian Bach. They recently performed several Bach cantatas and motets at the St. Thomas Church during the renowned international Bachfest Leipzig in Germany, and received raving reviews and extended standing ovation. They also performed at the St. George’s Church in Eisenach and the Bach Church in Arnstadt. 

In their home country, the Malaysia Bach Festival Singers and Orchestra have performed in Kuala Lumpur, Muar, George Town, Sibu, Bintulu, and Kota Kinabalu. Their performances of Bach's music have been repeatedly recognized at the BOH Cameronian Arts Awards, winning "Best of 2019" and "Best Choral Ensemble Performance" for St. Matthew Passion in 2020, and "Best Ensemble Performance" for "Prelude" from Orchestral Suite in C in 2019. That same year, David Chin's performance of Bach's Harpsichord Concerto in D major also received "Best Solo Instrumental Performance”. 

Bachfest Malaysia has been creating excellent music-making opportunities for young local talents. Malaysia Bach Festival Singers and Orchestra consists some of the best musicians in the country, which include leaders and principals from prominent ensembles such as the National Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Virama, Young Choral Academy, KL City Opera, Wicked Music People, VerSes, YinQi Choir, Klpac Orchestra, to name a few. Apart from the music of J.S. Bach, they have also performed works by composers such as Byrd, Victoria, Mozart, Vaughan Williams, and Dan Forrest, as well as a new commission by Malaysian composer Caeleb Tee.

Malaysia Bach Festival Singers and Orchestra

Howard Ng is a well recognised musician, creative producer, and arts manager in the South East Asian region. As a producer, Howard has created a great number of musical experiences for audiences in the region, including award winning performances of Ensemble Virama (Boh Cameronian Arts Award 2018). From 2014-2019, Howard was an annual grant recipient of the Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music for the creation and administration of the Malaysian Wind Music Prize, which has led to substantial professional development and training opportunities for aspiring young musicians in the country. 

From 2017-2023, Howard worked for Programming & Productions at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, a department that facilitates some 200 public facing events annually. In this capacity, Howard has led and curated major broadcast and multimedia initiatives, as well as execute productions for the Conservatory, working with artists such as Les Arts Florissants, Calefax Reed Quintet, Sir András Schiff, Masaaki Suzuki, Paul Lewis, Vadim Gluzman, Nobuko Imai, Igudesman & Joo, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, Eric Hoeprich, Wong Kahchun, Boston Brass, Margaret Leng Tan, Gabor Takács-Nagy and many others. In 2022, Howard experienced a brief attachment at the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam, studying with renowned production company Polyhymnia International. 

As an oboist, Howard Ng has performed for audiences on three continents. He has performed as a soloist with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra and its Youth Orchestra. Howard can regularly be heard at concerts of Ensemble Virama, where he is co-founder and artistic leader. He can also be regularly heard at concerts organised by Bachfest Malaysia around the country. As an orchestral musician, Howard has also performed with Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, Asian Youth Orchestra, Orchestra of the Music Makers (SG), Singapore Lyric Opera, The Philharmonic Orchestra (SG), Asean-Russia Youth Orchestra, Pro Musica Bangkok and many other ensembles. 

吳氏的雙簧管演奏橫跨世界三大洲。他曾在馬來西亞愛樂樂團及其青年管弦樂團擔任獨奏。他是Ensemble Virama音樂會的常客，同時也是該樂團的聯合創始人和藝術領袖。他也定期參與馬來西亞巴赫音樂節在全國各地的演出。此外，吳氏曾與新加坡交響樂團、卡塔爾愛樂樂團、亞洲青年管弦樂團、音樂製作人管弦樂團、新加坡抒情歌劇團、愛樂樂團、東盟-俄羅斯青年管弦樂團、曼谷Pro Musica管弦樂團和許多其他樂團合作演出。

Gabriel has performed solo recitals in the United States, Singapore, Malaysia and Myanmar, and has been featured as a soloist with the Baltimore Baroque Band, Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Red Dot Baroque, Resound Collective, Asian Cultural Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra of the Music Makers, Malaysia Bach Festival, Jakarta Festival Orchestra, PSPA International Ensemble, Braddell Heights Symphony Orchestra, and the Peabody Conductor’s Orchestra. He has also performed in the Wilmington Bach Festival, Amherst Early Music Festival, Music at St. Bartholomew’s series, and collaborated with UMBC’s Camerata Chamber Choir.

李氏曾在美國、新加坡、馬來西亞和緬甸舉辦獨奏音樂會，並在巴爾的摩巴洛克樂隊、新加坡交響樂團、紅點巴洛克樂團、Resound Collective、亞洲文化交響樂團、Orchestra of the Music Makers 、馬來西亞巴赫音樂節、雅加達音樂節樂團、PSPA 國際樂團、布拉德爾高地交響樂團以及皮博迪指揮樂團中擔任獨奏。他也曾在威爾明頓巴赫音樂節、阿默斯特早期音樂節、聖巴塞洛繆系列音樂節上演出，並與 UMBC 的 Camerata 室內合唱團合作。
