To conclude our week-long celebration, renowned Malaysian jazz artist and bandleader Tay Cher Siang, known for his appearance in Crazy Rich Asians, leads WVC -Malaysian Jazz Ensemble in a captivating reimagining of Bach’s music through the language of jazz. Many have noted the deep connection between jazz and Bach, particularly in his use of harmony, counterpoint, and dissonance. This special performance at Quan’s Kitchen will showcase unique arrangements that bridge Baroque and jazz traditions.

MEET THE ARTIST

 

TAY CHER SIANG
Tay Cher Siang is a pianist, composer, and educator shaping the jazz landscape in Malaysia and beyond. Trained in classical music, he discovered jazz in his teens and later earned a Master’s in Jazz Pedagogy from West Virginia University. As the leader of WVC Malaysian Jazz Ensemble and a former member of Unit Asia, Tay has toured extensively and produced ten albums of original compositions and arrangements. An award-winning composer, he has scored films, curated festivals, and directed major productions. Passionate about music education, he mentors young musicians, conducts masterclasses, and actively fosters jazz appreciation across the region.

WVC - Malaysian Jazz Ensemble
WVC is a dynamic Malaysian jazz ensemble that blends Asian influences with modern storytelling, creating a sound that transcends genres. Known for their fresh jazz interpretations of pop songs and Chinese classics, they craft original compositions exploring contemporary life. Formed in 2006, WVC has toured extensively across Asia, performed at major jazz festivals, and collaborated with renowned artists. Their work spans six albums and interdisciplinary projects merging jazz with literature and history. Featured in the Hollywood blockbuster Crazy Rich Asians, WVC—pianist Tay Cher Siang, bassist AJ, and drummer Adriel Wong—remains a leading force in Malaysia’s jazz scene.
