About

Fatima (2022)

Fatima was barely 9 years old when she was married off to a pimp in the red-light area of Forbesganj, a town at the northern end of the state of Bihar in India bordering Nepal. Branded as a ‘Criminal Tribe’ through the ‘Criminal Tribes Act 1871’, Fatima’s nomadic community has been stigmatized and was denied access to their legitimate trades. Men started pimping the women and eventually started trafficking girls from outside as well in order to survive. Fatima left her husband when he wanted to prostitute their minor daughter. She escaped the red-light area in 2007 and became an activist fighting against trafficking. The film shows Fatima and her family facing growing resentment and constantly being overwhelmed by challenges as she continues to motivate and fight for women and children there.

Freedom Talk: Sex Workers Organising for Change

Sex workers are often both underrepresented and heavily stigmatised in the fight for labour rights. However, a growing number of sex workers want recognition that sex work is work. At this Freedom Talk, sex workers and their allies will discuss the realities of their work, the challenges they face and their rights.

“Sex Workers Organising for Change” will be moderated by Wathshlah Naidu, media freedom and gender equality advocate.

Panellists are Rahayu Rahmat, who has been active in community work with homeless, drug users, sex workers and HIV/ AIDS Community since 2010. She is a recovering drug user, former sex worker and HIV positive.

And Fatimah Abdullah@Selvi who served as the representative for Women Sex Workers Country Coordinating Mechanism and is the founder and head of Pertubuhan Advokasi Masyarakat Terpinggir(PAMT) for and by sex workers.
