The Last Five Years is well known for its cross-narrative structure, where the stories of the two characters are told in opposite chronological order, meeting in the middle. The story spans five years in the relationship of a young couple. The male lead, Jamie, is a writer who soon finds success and recognition after graduation. He then meets Cathy, an actress. The two fall in love, overcoming obstacles to be together. A rift forms as Jamie’s career takes off and he becomes the darling of the social circles. Cathy's career doesn’t go as smoothly as she hopes, and she struggles to find her place in Jamie's social circle. Jamie strays and, after leaving a goodbye letter for Cathy, decides to end their five-year romance.

He has been referred to as "the smartest and most delicate composer after Stephen Sondheim" by the Philadelphia Inquirer.
