SYNOPSIS
Behind the Closed Doors tells the heartbreaking story of Nasiba, a refugee mother of three—Sahar, Arezo, and Omid — struggling to survive in a new country. Despite working tirelessly in a restaurant, Nasiba barely earns enough to cover basic needs like food, rent, and her children’s school fees. When she turns to her boss for financial help, he presents her with a cruel choice: compromise her dignity for money. Nasiba refuses, choosing to protect her self-respect even though it means further hardship for her family.
The story captures Nasiba’s quiet suffering as she fights to give her children a better life, while receiving little support from the world around her. It sheds light on the emotional and financial struggles of refugees, leaving readers with a deep sense of her isolation, frustration, and resilience in the face of overwhelming odds.

ABOUT US
Parastoo Theater is a theater troupe of refugees in Kuala Lumpur which aims to raise awareness on social issues faced by refugees. Founded in 2017 by writer and director Saleh Sepas, Parastoo practices the ‘Theatre of the Oppressed’ (TO), a form of interactive theater intended for community problem-solving. TO pedagogy uses theater games and exercises as a vehicle for participants to gain motivation and self-confidence, and eventually to internalize empowerment.
Since 2017 Parastoo Theater has organized numerous theater performances whereby the last play performed in July reached over 1,000 people. Parastoo Theater has a well established practice on successfully organizing workshops with the topics of domestic violence and mental health, as well as delivering training on research, writing and acting.
