About

The klpac Orchestra, under the baton of Maestro Lee Kok Leong, launches into its 2024 season with a special programme of famed German composer and pianist Ludwig van Beethoven whose diverse repertoire bridged the Classical period and the Romantic Era.

Over 200 years ago, Beethoven premiered two of his most important works at the same concert which also marked his very last performance, a few years short of him going completely deaf.

Symphony No. 5 went on to become one of the most famous symphonies of all time with its instantly recognisable four-note opening motif that has been played time and again in the classical circle but also in pop culture and beyond.

Music lovers can also experience a more tender and gentler side of Beethoven in Piano Concerto No. 4, performed by Dr Poom Prommachart (Best Solo Performance, BOH Cameronian Arts Awards) on the Yamaha CFX flagship concert grand, sponsored by Yamaha Music Malaysia. Apart from an impressive list of accolades. Prommachart also earned a place on the Rector’s List of Honour for the Most Exceptional Graduates when he completed his Doctor of Music programme.

The concert also features Egmont Overture, one of his rare works written for a play of the same name.

Supported by Sunway University.

About The klpac Orchestra

The notion of a community orchestra is very much in keeping with the vision of The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac), which is to foster creative excellence and develop and nurture performing arts culture in Malaysia.

Driven by the obvious need for a community orchestra to cater for the growing numbers of classically trained music students and musicians, the first auditions were held in October 2006. The klpac Orchestra’s debut concert in December 2006 was “Candlelight Christmas”, conducted by the Orchestra’s founder and klpac’s first Music Director & Resident Conductor, the late Mr. Brian Tan.

In setting up the orchestra, klpac hopes to provide enriching and engaging musical experiences for people with varying musical backgrounds, in an environment that promotes fellowship and respect. The founding of the klpac Orchestra provides more opportunities for aspiring musicians, amateur or professional, while helping to promote orchestral music.

Since then, hundreds of musicians have been a part of The klpac Orchestra and its many concerts throughout the years. After the passing of Mr. Brian Tan, Dr. Takahisa took over the baton in 2012.

In 2015, Lee Kok Leong assumed the position of the orchestra’s Music Director and Resident Conductor and has since been carrying on the late Mr. Brian Tan’s legacy and dream.

Resident Music Directors:
Mr. Brian Tan (2006 – 2011)
Dr. Takahisa Ota (2012-2014)
Mr. Lee Kok Leong (2015 – Present)
