Greetings and a warm welcome to the Malaysian Student Film Festival 2021!
This year, the pandemic and unforeseen circumstances has caused many theatres to close down, interrupting the tradition of MNights for Malaysian societies. Thus, the Malaysian Student Film Festival was formed, created as a ‘non-profit’ organisation dedicated to aid students in creating MNights into MFilms - a 10 to 40 minute short film which will be showcased in June 2021. MSFF aims to provide industry workshops as well as mentorship programs for young creatives on how to film during the pandemic and many societies are struggling with the scale of shooting a production in covid restrictions as well as balancing the mental health of both cast and crew. With a month’s showcase of 12 student films from universities students in the UK, Ireland, and Malaysia, join us as we celebrate the last day of the festival with an awards ceremony, judged by film/entertainment industry experts in both Malaysia and the UK to encourage these young filmmaker crews to try to create a home away from home environment through filmmaking.
MSFF is not only the platform to showcase the amazing works of Malaysian student societies overseas but also as a creative organisation ultimately run by students and alumni for students, dedicated in helping them continue the tradition in exploring one’s cultural identity in a foreign land. Many of the films pertain to specific Malaysian slang or cultural references. Most if not all of these students are not film students with little knowledge of how to make a film yet they wanted to create a home away from home for incoming Malaysian freshers in a collaborative short film. We as MSFF want to showcase this. The teams have worked on the films for 6-8 months and have encountered many challenges. Therefore, we at MSFF wanted to provide them the best platform and experts in the industry to judge their films. We hope to see you join us in congratulating these young filmmakers throughout the pandemic.
